The Sakr-80 [Falson] is an Egyptian artillery rocket
developed
jointly with France, intended to replace Egypt's
FROG-7. Rockets from
the
Sakr-80 can carry up to a 200 kg payload and have a
variety of
warhead options such as unitary high explosive fragmentation, unitary
high explosive hollow charge, anti-personnel/anti-materiel cluster
munitions, and anti-tank cluster munitions.
The Laith is an Iraqi 90 km range improved version of the FROG-7.
Although this system is poorly documented in the open literature, given
other joint Iraqi-Egyptian development projects, it is reasonable to
assume that this FROG-7 replacement effort was also a joint bi-national
project.

In cooperation with the French Société Nationale des Poudres et
Explosifs (SNPE), Egypt has developed, produced, and deployed the
Sakr-80 rocket as a replacement for the aging Frog missiles. The factory
in Sakr is responsible for producing the warheads, launchers and fire
control systems for the Sakr-80. Various warheads were under development
there in early 1988, including an HE armor piercing warhead, an
antipersonnel/antimateriel submunition warhead, and an antitank minelet
warhead; however, a chemical warhead was not planned. (6)
According to a press report from June 1990, China has signed a
protocol with Egypt to help modernize the Sakr missile factory,
"enabling it to produce a newer version of Soviet antiaircraft missiles,
the surface-to-surface Scud-B
and Silkworm and the Egyptian Sakr
rockets." (7)

The Egyptian ballistic missile development program apparently continues,
with steadfast technological progress since the 1960s.
The RS-120
Tactical Ballistic Missile Program is still in the developmental stage
and should be shortly replacing the Frog-7 and supplementing the Sakr
80;
by having a range of 120 km, it would be considered as an
intermediate system between the battlefield range ballistic missile
system and the theater ballistic missile system. Should, however, there
be a dramatic change in its political climate and financial resources,
Egypt possesses the technological and personnel resources to produce a
Scud B/C, Al Badr and Project-T and could possibly acquire the Nodong
missile technology.

Notes: Sakr-80 is a joint Egyptian-French effort which
uses the same 8-wheeled TEL (transporter-erector-launcher) as the
Soviet-built FROG-7 missile, which the Sakr-80 replaces in Egyptian use.
During the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War, Egypt supplied some to Iraq which
operated them under the name “Laith”.

وصف النظام. In 1982, SAKR
Factory for Developed Industries began the development of a new, much larger
and more capable multiple launch rocket system.
The SAKR 80 was designed to replace and complement other Russian design
systems. The new system was
designed
to be integrated with the Russian ZIL/BAZ-135L4
truck, already in inventory and readily available.
Because Egypt was not yet fully conversant in
the development and manufacture of solid rocket motors, the French firm Societe
Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs, a world leader in this area, was contracted
to develop the new motor. In 1993, for unknown
reasons,
the SAKR 80 development program was suspended.
Description.
Even though the SAKR program has been suspended, many
details regarding the SAKR 80 are still sensitive. What is known is presented in the
Technical Data. In addition to the
ZIL/BAZ-135L4 truck mounting for the SAKR 80, the prime contractor, in
conjunction with Helwan Machine Tools Company,
developed a conversion of the
existing FROG-7 launcher which is also mounted on the ZIL/BAZ-135L4 truck. The conversion
allows three SAKR 80 rockets
to be fired. In addition, a
program to
integrate a new four-round SAKR 80 launcher with the T-55 tank has been
undertaken; however, the
status of this program is not clear, and it may well
be dormant. The hydraulically elevated
and traversed launcher is mounted on a turntable that replaces the turret

Propulsion.
The SAKR 80 rocket uses an unspecified two-part,
solid-propellant rocket motor of an unknown weight. The first stage, which burns for six seconds
and produces 108.9 kilonewtons (12.1 tons) thrust, weighs 310 kilograms (704
pounds). The contractor for the complete
motor is the French firm Societe Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs.
Launcher Mode.
The SAKR 80 system uses a three-round launcher on a ZIL/BAZ-135L4
truck. The launcher has also been
integrated with a modified T-55 tank chassis.
The system is composed of three side-by-side launchers. Firing is accomplished electrically
Warhead.
The SAKR 80 rocket is equipped with four different warheads
for different missions; all warheads weigh 200 kilograms (440 pounds). The high-explosive warhead is available in
two types, fragmentation and hollow charge.
The anti-armor submunition-dispensing warhead dispenses 65 submunitions,
each weighing 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds).
The anti-personnel/anti-vehicle warhead dispenses 950 hollow-charge
submunitions which are stabilized in descent by a ribbon drogue. Other warhead options were in development for
the SAKR 80; most of these were submunition-dispensing weapons with more sophisticated anti-tank and
anti-personnel type submunitions..................................
