The JSF jets, for which Australia is likely to pay $16 billion, were comprehensively beaten in highly classified simulated dogfights against Russian Sukhoi fighters, it has been reported.

The war games, conducted at Hawaii's Hickam airbase last month, were witnessed by at least four RAAF personnel and a member of Australia's peak military spy agency, the Defence Intelligence Organisation, The West Australian said.

Opposition defence spokesman Nick Minchin said he was taking "with a grain of salt" the validity of the report.

"This is based on a computer game, computer modelling of the aircraft," he told Sky News.

"This is not real life."

Senator Minchin said he had a classified briefing on the JSF from its US manufacturer Lockheed-Martin which had promoted the aircraft as the most advanced jet fighter ever.

"I can't really say much about it, but this is a phenomenal aircraft.

"As our chief of defence Angus Houston has said this is a most extraordinary aircraft, it is the right aircraft for Australia."

The multi-purpose fighter would be the backbone of the United States military, Senator Minchin said.

"We are fortunate to be in it and the government should move to make the decision to acquire it."

WA Liberal backbencher Dennis Jensen said he had spoken to a third party with knowledge of the final classified test results who had claimed the JSF had been clubbed like baby seals by the simulated Sukhois, The West Australian reported.

He said the government should demand that the US Government sell it the F-22 which was already in operation instead of the JSF.

A response was been sought from the government.

Alors que le ministre français de la défense Hervé Morin revient tout juste d'une visite en Australie, où l'engagement en Afghanistan a été évoqué, la polémique fait rage dans le pays sur les questions de défense. Outre les critiques nationales sur le manque de moyens australiens déployés en Afghanistan, le Premier ministre, Kevin Rudd, a évoqué, la semaine dernière, la probabilité d’une “explosion” de la course aux armements dans la zone Asie-Pacifique. Dans le cadre d’une allocution sur la sécurité régionale prononcée face à un parterre de militaires à la retraite, Kevin Rudd a estimé que l’Australie devait se préparer à cette course aux armements, en augmentant substantiellement son effort de défense, en particulier dans le domaine naval.

Bien qu’aucun pays n’ait été expressément nommé, il est évident que la Chine, l’Indonésie et la Malaisie sont indirectement visées. Ces propos interviennent dans un contexte difficile, suite aux rumeurs faisant état de l’incapacité du F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) à faire face aux Su-30MK Flanker d’origine russe, lors de simulations de combats rapprochés, récemment menées sur la base américaine de Hickam (Hawaii). Le Flanker prolifère depuis quelques années au sein des forces aériennes voisines, comme celles de Chine (autour de 280 exemplaires toutes séries confondues), d’Indonésie (10), du Vietnam (24), de Malaisie (18 ) ou d’Inde (autour de 120). Le ministre de la Défense, Joel Fitzgibbon, a d’ailleurs demandé une étude complémentaire au MoD australien avant de poursuivre la procédure d’acquisition du F-35. La RAAF prévoit l’acquisition d’une centaine de F-35A Lightning II à partir de 2013. Ces polémiques alimentent à nouveau les débats autour d’une potentielle acquisition du F-22 Raptor, que Washington rechigne, jusqu'à maintenant, à exporter, en lieu et place du JSF. Bien que le secrétaire américain à la Défense, Robert Gates ait récemment déclaré qu’il n’y voyait aucune objection de principe, la loi sur les “Foreign Military Sales” en interdit pour l’instant l’exportation. Par ailleurs, la décision d’acquérir 24 F/A-18 Super Hornet Block II, pour combler le vide capacitaire en attendant l’arrivée des JSF, a, elle aussi, été critiquée par d’anciens pilotes, qui estiment que le vénérable F-111 Aardvark est encore capable, à moindre coût, d’assurer efficacement l’intérim au sein des forces aériennes australiennes.

Dans le cadre de cette course aux armements, les industriels français pourraient être plus largement sollicités. Car la France a déjà vendu certains de ces équipements, aux premiers rangs desquels, l'hélicoptère de combat Tigre, le NH90 ou les ravitailleurs d'EADS MRTT.

Flying blind, Sukhois ‘shot’

Flying near-blind in the US, the Indian Air Force’s frontline Sukhoi 30Mki fighters have been “shot” down in missions at the Red Flag wargames, the toughest combat aircraft exercise that the US hosts for its allies.

The Russian-made Sukhoi 30Mkis have been asked to fly in the exercise only after switching off a sophisticated radar and without recourse to a key shield against surface-to-air missiles, a senior air force officer said. The exercise in which the IAF is participating for the first time entered its most complex phase today.

“Shooting down” or getting “shot down” must necessarily take place in a wargame. In 2003, US Air Force’s (USAF) F-15 Tomcat aircraft participating in an exercise out of Gwalior in India were similarly “shot down”.

Despite being hamstrung at the Red Flag games, the IAF contingent was getting invaluable training as part of a “Blue force” tasked to defend its territory against an aggressor “Red force” in the Nevada desert. The range over which the exercise is taking place has mock-ups of several targets that are mostly military establishments, air force spokesman Wing Commander Mahesh Upasani, who is with the contingent, told The Telegraph from the Nellis air force base.

The IAF is participating with eight Su-30s, two IL-78s (mid-air refuellers), an IL-76 (heavy lift transporters) and 247 men led by Group Captain D. Chaudhary. Frontline aircraft from the air forces of South Korea and France and, of course, the US are engaged both with the IAF and against it in the drills.

“Captain Marcus ‘Spike’ Wilson of the USAF Aggressors in his appreciation of the IAF has said the IAF is a world-class air force with great aircraft and great leadership,” said Upasani.

The IAF Sukhois have been asked not to show the full capacity of their BARS II radar so that their signatures may not be recorded.
